Most people who snore do not realise they may have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) โ a condition where the airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, cutting off breathing for seconds at a time, sometimes hundreds of times a night.
OSA is not simply loud snoring. It is a medical condition with serious consequences for cardiovascular health, daytime function, blood pressure, mood and long-term brain health โ and it is widely underdiagnosed in India.
The good news: it is highly treatable once correctly diagnosed. An ENT evaluation is often the right starting point because most causes of OSA originate in the nose, palate or throat.
- Witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep
- Waking with gasping, choking or dry mouth
- Excessive daytime sleepiness despite 7โ8 hours sleep
- Morning headaches on waking
- Difficulty concentrating or mood changes
- Child snoring loudly and mouth breathing
- Bedwetting in a child over 5 years old
- High blood pressure not responding to medication
Common Causes of Snoring & Sleep Apnea
Nasal Obstruction
Deviated septum, turbinate hypertrophy or nasal polyps force mouth breathing and significantly worsen OSA severity.
Soft Palate & Uvula
An elongated soft palate or large uvula vibrates during sleep โ the source of the snoring sound in most adults.
Enlarged Tonsils & Adenoids
The most common cause of OSA in children. Adenotonsillectomy often resolves paediatric sleep apnea completely.
Jaw & Airway Anatomy
A recessed chin or narrow dental arch can contribute to airway collapse โ often needs combined ENT and dental management.
Obesity & Neck Fat
Excess tissue around the neck narrows the airway during sleep. Weight loss meaningfully improves OSA severity.
Allergy & Chronic Rhinitis
Untreated nasal allergy causes persistent blockage that contributes to mouth breathing and worsening snoring.
All Treatment Pathways โ What Is Right for You
Medical Management
Treating underlying nasal allergy or rhinitis often significantly reduces snoring severity without surgery.
Nasal Surgery
Septoplasty, turbinate reduction or polypectomy to restore nasal breathing โ often the most impactful first intervention.
Palate Surgery (UPPP)
Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty for soft palate-related snoring in carefully selected patients.
Adenotonsillectomy
Removal of enlarged tonsils and adenoids โ the most effective treatment for paediatric OSA, often completely curative.
CPAP Therapy
Gold standard for moderate-to-severe OSA. Arranged following sleep study confirmation of diagnosis and severity.
Mandibular Advancement Device
Effective oral appliance for mild-moderate OSA โ especially when CPAP is not tolerated. Available in-house at our clinic.
๐ฆท Airway Dentistry at Rog Nidan Clinic: Where jaw position and dental arch contribute to airway obstruction, Dr Pranshu Mehta works alongside Dr Paridhi Gupta โ MDS Orthodontist and certified Airway Dentist at the same clinic. Mandibular advancement devices, dental arch expansion and sleep appliances are available in-house for a fully integrated airway approach.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is all snoring a sign of sleep apnea?
No. Simple snoring is caused by vibration of soft tissue and is not dangerous on its own. OSA occurs when the airway actually collapses, causing oxygen drops and fragmented sleep. Key warning signs for OSA are witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping on waking, excessive daytime sleepiness and morning headaches. An ENT evaluation distinguishes the two.
My child snores loudly โ should I be worried?
Habitual loud snoring in a child (more than 3 nights per week) should always be evaluated by an ENT. Paediatric OSA is most commonly caused by enlarged tonsils and adenoids, and unlike adult OSA, it can be completely resolved with adenotonsillectomy. Untreated paediatric OSA affects brain development, behaviour and school performance.
Can sleep apnea be treated without CPAP?
For many patients, yes. If OSA is driven by nasal obstruction, nasal surgery may eliminate or greatly reduce severity. In children, adenotonsillectomy is often curative. For mild-moderate OSA in adults, a mandibular advancement device is an effective alternative. CPAP remains the most reliable option for severe OSA but is not the only choice.
