Dr Allergy Diaries

Allergy is never just a sneeze.

An ENT × specialist conversation series. In every episode, ENT surgeon Dr. Pranshu Mehta sits down with a doctor from a different speciality to explain how allergy moves through the whole body — nose, ears, sleep, teeth, skin, lungs and a child’s growth. Real cases. No jargon. Evidence-based.

Why this series

Your body treats allergy as one problem. Healthcare usually treats it in pieces.

Most people meet allergy in fragments. An ENT sees the blocked nose. A dermatologist sees the eczema. A dentist sees the narrow jaw. A paediatrician sees the cough that keeps coming back. Each is looking at a real part of the problem, but rarely at the whole picture together.

The body doesn’t work in pieces. The lining of the nose continues into the sinuses, the ears and the lungs. A blocked nose changes how a child breathes, sleeps and even how their face grows. The same immune tendency can show up in the skin, the eyes and the gut.

Dr Allergy Diaries exists to connect those dots — so that patients and parents understand what is happening in their own bodies, ask better questions, and stop treating one symptom at a time.

“Every episode puts two specialists at one table, because allergy doesn’t respect the boundaries between our departments. If you understand how it connects, you can finally treat the cause and not just the sneeze.”

— Dr. Pranshu Mehta, DLO (ENT), host
Allergy, head to toe

How allergy can affect the whole body

Allergy starts when the immune system over-reacts to something harmless — dust mites, pollen, pets, moulds or certain foods. What people notice depends on where that reaction shows up. These are the areas this series explores, one speciality at a time.

👃

Nose & sinuses

Sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, post-nasal drip and repeated sinus flare-ups — allergic rhinitis is the most common face of allergy.

👂

Ears

Swelling around the Eustachian tube can leave ears feeling blocked or popping, and in children it may contribute to fluid behind the eardrum.

🌙

Sleep & breathing

A blocked nose pushes people into mouth breathing and snoring. In children, together with enlarged adenoids, it can disturb sleep night after night.

🦷

Teeth, jaw & facial growth

Long-term mouth breathing in growing children is linked with a narrow upper jaw, crowded teeth and changes in bite — where ENT and orthodontics meet.

🫁

Chest & lungs

The nose and lungs are one airway. Allergic rhinitis and asthma often occur together, and poorly controlled nasal allergy can make asthma harder to control.

👁️

Eyes

Itchy, red, watery eyes — allergic conjunctivitis — very often travel with nasal allergy, especially in dust and pollen seasons.

🧴

Skin

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) and hives are part of the same allergic tendency. In many children, eczema is the first sign of it.

🍽️

Food & gut

Food allergy, itching in the mouth with certain fruits, and conditions like reflux that can look like allergy — and need to be told apart.

🧠

Energy, focus & daily life

Poor sleep and constant symptoms show up as tiredness, low concentration and a harder time at school or work.

This is general education, not a diagnosis. Symptoms like these can have other causes — please see a doctor for an assessment.
